Has any other member of the forum ever seen a book by Wilbur Smith (I think it was anyway) called "...And the white men sang"? It was my father's and I never got round to reading it but the cover was an artist's drawing of the scene from Zulu where Corporal Allen is trying to help Hitch to unbutton his tunic after they had both been wounded. The artist had faithfully reproduced the actor's faces and they were clearly recogniseable but for some reason he had painted the uniforms Khaki. As I said, I never got round to reading the book so I don't know if it had any connection with the film Zulu other than the cover but I was wondering if anyone else had read it or even seen that particular edition.

Eddie,

'And the White Men Sang' is an excellent novel by Alexander Fullerton.

It tells the tale of ill-fated Shangani Patrol under Major Allan Wilson, during the 1893 Matabele War.

It's not the first time a jacket illustrator has ripped off a still from 'Zulu', I have a copy of the book with the warrior raising the Martini-Henry rifle in triumph.

Thanks John, don't know where I got Wilbur Smith from then? How the years take their toll on the mind!

I believe a book called 'Where The Lion Feeds' by Wilbur Smith has a solid Zulu connection but I can't swear to it.

Terry,

Is that the one with the Gatling Guns at Rorke's Drift? When I read that I put it away never to looked upon again.

I've got an original publication copy of this book. First published 1958 by Peter Davies LTD. London.
The jacket cover is reproduction of the painting in City Hall Bulawayo. This painting was titled 'The Last Stand of Major Allan Wilson at Shangani, Dec 4, 1893 and dedicated to the memory of the brave men'. (thats a long title!).
It was painted by the Scottish artist, Allen Stewart.
The book is excellent, I've read it twice, & won't lend it.
