I have read the report on this alleged break in at Rorkes Drift, and it appears it is a storm in tea cup, the alleged culprit was none other than the very respected Mr David Rattray, apparently according to The Natal Witness newspaper Dvid had been denied access to an hall where he gave lectures to tourists, the door being padlocked, so he apparently according to the report had broken the padlock off on three occasions, maintaning he has rightfull access and permission to use the premises obviously there was no criminal intent on his part, David is way above that sort of thing, and hopefully this misunderstanding will soon be cleared up.this reprt can be read at the following web address htp://www.witness.co.za

MEDIA RELEASE (No 4 of 2002)

AMAFA/HERITAGE KZN

The KwaZulu-Natal Heritage Council has asked the police to investigate incidents of malicious damage to property, allegedly involving tour operators David Rattray and David Charles.

This follows incidents on Monday and Tuesday this week in which the padlock on a gate to the Rorkes Drift battle site was cut with a bolt-cutter.

The gate is away from the main entrance and is intended for the use of the local community, not tourists or the public in general.

The battle site is owned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church and held on a long lease by the Heritage Council. It was fenced recently for security reasons and to prevent access to the site without payment. A key to the private gate is kept by the church, which allows local people to use it.

The allegations against Mr Rattray and Mr Charles have been reported to the police at Helpmekaar.

Mr Barry Marshall, Director of Amafa/Heritage KZN, said today that access to the battle site via the main gate was perfectly adequate.

All we ask is that people use the main gate, park in the area provided and take the very short walk to the battle site. Nobody has the right to use another entrance and drive on to the site. Increasing numbers of visitors to Rorkes Drift have made access control necessary.

I have e mailed him attempting to get more details of his Phd - where he got it, what his thesis was on etc - but he refuses to answer my questions.
