Yet another film about the Anglo-Zulu war is in production, seemingly from a Zulu viewpoint. The title is "Like Lions They Fought" and a few scraps of information are posted at http://us.imdb.com/Title?0307699.

Correction: the title is "The Zulu." ("Like Lions They Fought" is the tagline.)

Diana,

Having checked the site, I found the only cast member to cast as a character called "Paulina", so I wonder if Paulina Dlamini's story has been translated into a film?

There is a book entitled 'Servant of Two Kings' which was published about her, based around a translation of her own account - the two kings mentioned in the title are King Cetshwayo kaMpande & God. So it may be a vehicle for a Zulu woman's eyeview of the Anglo-Zulu War, could be interesting.

Diana,

Indeed there is - I have been following the progress on www.thezulu.co.za.

Mbongeni Ngema (who wrote the famous musical Sarafina!, about the Soweto riots) wrote a stage musical called The Zulu. It mixes traditional Zulu musical forms with modern music. It was performed in South Africa and on a limited tour of Europe last year. It is about the Zulu kingdom during the 1879 war, and the central character is indeed Paulina Dlamini, who serves as narrator, although Cetshwayo also features heavily. It includes set-pieces of the warriors going off to Isandlwana and the like. A soundtrack CD of the show is available in South Africa. The film is obviously a cinematic version of the stage production.

Hope this helps!

Dave
