I visited Brecon not tto long ago, searching for info re- my uncle who went in on D-Day 1944 and didn't really take in any of the Rorke's Drift display. I now find my self interested to know more about Joseph Williams and the other (nonVC) John Williams. Who were they? Where did they come from? How old were they? There is just a "long shot" that I could be related and it would be nice to know.

Dear David,
I can see it would be nice to have a relative who fought at Rorke's Drift. I have to tell you however that there were 25 soldiers named Williams in the 1st Battalion and 30 in the 2nd Battalion involved in the 1877-79 campaigns. 3 of the Williams were at Rorke's Drift. Ignoring John Williams (Fielding) VC - 25B/934 John Williams was born in Barristown, Glamorgan; 25B/1398 Joseph Williams enlisted at Monmouth (so it is possible he lived nearby) and 25B/1328 LSgt Thomas Williams enlisted at Brecon (again he may have been born near Brecon or not). I am sorry I cannot be more helpful - you will have to just work backwards through the generations.
