Date | Original Topic | 16th August 2002 | sphinx collar badge By Bob Kolkka Does anyone know the specific origin and significance
of the sphinx collar badge on the tunics of the 24th and
other regiments in the 1870's? From what I read on the
National Army Museum's website, the badge would reflect
the place where the regiment served the most time, but I
don't think the 24th ever served in Egypt. | Date | Replies | 16th August 2002 | CLIVE DICKENS Bob
The "Shiinx" in 24th foot collor and headress badges was awarded to the Regiment for it's services in Egypt in 1801, no doubt other's will also be able to add to this

The Sphinx was awarded to 29 British Regiments of Foot after the campaign in Egypt between 8 March and 26 August 1801. It was also awarded to the Grenadier Guards and the Scots Guards. The honour 'Egypt' is unusual because it is Battle Honour but does not have a Battle Honour scroll on the Regimental Colour only the Sphinx.
