Date | Original Topic | 5th September 2002 | Ntombi Drift By Mark Hobson I've been trying to find information about the settlers living in the Ntombi Drift area during the Zulu War, especially the community of Luneberg. How did German people come to be there? Were they farmers, missionaries etc? Any help would be much appreciated. | Date | Replies | 8th September 2002 | Ron Lock Intombi: The present day German community, mainly farmers and cattlemen living around Luneburg, are mostly descended from German Lutheran missionaries who arrived in the area as early as 1860. They taught manual skills and established their converts when sufficiently trained, on small farms along the banks of the Phongola River. You will find quite a lot about Luneburg and the battle at Intombi Drift in my book "Blood on the Painted Mountain" published by Greenhill Books, London in 1995. Incidentally, when I was in Luneburg area a few months ago, I noted three directional signs to the drift, all spelled differently: Intombi, Ntombi and eNtombi.
If you want to know more about the German influence and history of the area try The Principal, The German School, Luneburg 3183, South Africa. |
