Glynne,

I know you've addressed this to Peter, but I can assist.

The film was entitled 'The Symbol of Sacrifice', made in 1918 in South Africa. It told the story of the Anglo-Zulu War, with a love story interwoven into the action scenes.

Johan Colenbrander, an Anglo-Zulu War veteran, and one of Cecil Rhodes' former 'lieutenants', played the part of Lord Chelmsford. He drowned whilst filming a river crossing.

The film was made towards the end of WW1, so there's a German villain who tampers with the Prince Imperial's saddlery - thus leading to his death.

I believe the restored remaining clips of the film are held by the Natal Archives, or maybe that's the KwaZulu-Natal Archives in Pietermaritzburg.

There are some good, if not accurate, action scenes in the film. I've got a copy of the film's programme kicking around here somewhere.

A remarkable project given that 1906 'Poll-Tax Uprising' - as I have been told to call it by H.R.H. Prince Shange, happened only 12 years before.

Cheers John, couldn't have said it better myself (well, OK, in fact, I couldn't have said it at all!! :-) )

All the best,

Peter
