Date | Original Topic | 14th November 2002 | Fugitives Trail Graves By Melvin Hunt There are many whitewashed cairns along the Fugitives Trail to the Manzinyama river but I also saw several cairn like piles of stones which were not whitewashed. They were on the trail so I wondered if they were indeed graves and if so, why were they not whitewashed. | Date | Replies | 20th November 2002 | sally My understanding of the maintenance, or lack thereof, of the cairns is that I BELIEVE the reason that some appear to be whitewashed and others not is quite simply that the cairns used to be maintained by the War Graves Commission, who repainted the stones regularly. However, they are no longer responsible for these graves/cairns which I believe are now the responsibility of Amafa
and the reason that so many of the cairns appear unpainted is simply lack of funds for maintenance. |
