Date | Original Topic | 25th November 2002 | Aftermath of Rorke's Drift By Rich I was just wondering if, with all the prestige of the event, people believe Rorke's Drift was a turning point (for good or bad) in the history of British Imperialism? | Date | Replies | 26th November 2002 | James Garland When I read the newspapers of the time I am left with the impression that Isandhlwana made more of an impact than Rorke's Drift on the Victorians. I don't know if any of those events amount to a turning point though.
Maiwand in Afghanistan was a shock to the Victorians as well.
Of all the imperial events I think the Indian Mutiny (or rebellion depending on your point of view) had the most important impact on the psyche of the British Empire. | 28th November 2002 | Rich Thanks for your reply James - points taken. |
