Date | Original Topic | 27th November 2002 | Did the NNC wear any uniform? By Miguel In the film Zulu the NNC men are depicted wearing a tan uniform. But in the accounts of Fugitive's drift I think I did read that the NNC simply took out some red cloth tied to their foreheads so they could be mistaken with the attacking zulus.
Is it safe to think they wore nothing different from their usual garments but the red cloth?

When the N.N.C. were first conceived a uniform of sorts was considered, however, limited time and the exchequer meant that only the Natal Natal Pioneers were uniformed.
The compromise red head band was reached, however the battalions would be distinguished by different coloured blankets.
Otherwise the men of the N.N.C. were very outwardly little different from their enemy.
During the course of the campaign, and after the re-organisation of the N.N.C. - some units did receive a uniform of sorts.
By the way, I haven't forgotten your other requests, I've been somewhat beset with problems over my computer line. When I reply to you I will also scan the N.N.C. photographs I have.
John Young,
