Date | Original Topic | 11th December 2002 | 124th Anniversary of the Ultimatum. By John Young One hundred and twenty-four years ago today, was also a Wednesday, under the shade of a wild fig tree on the Natal bank of the Tugela (Thukela) River, Frere's haughty ultimatum was issued to the assembled Zulu delegation. An event which would lead to war between two nations which until that day, had for many years co-existed as friends.
Let us remember today the futility of war, and those who fell in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, irrespective of their creed or colour, whether African or European, Briton, Zulu or Boer, Imperial or Colonial, let us not forget their sacrifice.
"Lest We Forget, Lest We Forget."
