Date | Original Topic | 22nd December 2002 | Hill of the Sphinx By Keith Smith If I may be something of a heretic, I have just read David Jackson's new book (thanks, Martin) and was, frankly, disappointed.
I thought his 1965 aricles under the heading "Isandlwana: The Sources Re-examined" were a wonderful synthesis, although I disagreed with his placing of the Zulu bivouac.
In his introduction, Mr Jackson says that nothing has been published in the intervening 37 years since then to alter his opinions at that time. One wonders, therefore, why he bothered to publish this new work, which is a re-write of the articles. Apart from telling us that Zabange (mentioned in The Gaudy Cloth article) was fiction, and finally tracking down the Hamer account, there really is nothing new here.
Let me add, by the by, that, as with the articles, it is beautifully written and will be a great help to those that were not able to read the original.
