10th August 2001 | Capt. Wardell, 2nd Warwickshire Regt. By Stephen McDonald Captain Wardell, originally from Toronto, was in the 2nd Warwickshire Regt. and was killed at Isandhlwana. I'm interested in doing some research on his military background, as to my knowledge he was the only Canadian that participated in the Zulu War. Has anyone done any research on this officer? Lastly, is his burial place known?
This web site is excellent & I've read & learned from many of the topics in the Discussion Forum. Most of the people using this forum impress me with their depth of knowledge.
Keep up the good work.

11th August 2001 | Alan Critchley Stephen,
there is half a page on Captain George Vaughan Wardell in the book 'The Noble 24th.' by Norman Holme. As you say he was born in Toronto 21/2/1840. Sure it was a different place then to the one I visited two years ago.
If you like, I will write out the details. If you want the details I will send them.

11th August 2001 | Martin Everett Research - Yes. There is a service record for him in the Public Record Office at Kew - reference WO25/861/III - see www.pro.gov.uk
All the information found is contained in The Noble 24th' As far as I can tell there are not other Canadian links in officers and soldiers of the 24th at Iandhlwana or Rorke's Drift. |
11th August 2001 | John Young Don't forget J.P. MacKinnon & S.H. Shadbolt's "The South African Campaign of 1879" pages 129-130.
I am also aware of the location of his medal in a private collection.

11th August 2001 | Ian Woodason Lt Frederick Philip Smyly 2/24th (1879 clasp)died in Canada (BC) in 1945 - according to Holme.

11th August 2001 | Martin Everett Lt FP Smyly arrived in Zululand after the action was over but qualified for a campaign medal. Much later he was Battalion Second in Command to Colonel Courtney Trower (who had also served in the Zulu war) in 5th (Service) Battalion in WW1. Afer WW1, I believe, Swyly went to Canada and worked for CPR or CNR. To anticipate the next question - Australia - Lt Anstey 1/24 born there, killed Isandhlwana, buried UK; Cpl JW Roy 1/24 DCM a RD defender - died Australia |
13th August 2001 | Stephen McDonald Thanks Ian and Allan for the emails on this.
They provided good background info and ideas on where in Toronto to search for info on Wardell.
Also, thanks Martin & John for your comments on this topic.
Now...it's just a matter of detective work on my part.
Will keep the site posted.
