Date | Original Topic | 10th January 2003 | Belt and Ammo pouch colors at Rorke's Drift? By Lance Mertz I am painting a figure of the soldiers at Rorke's drift. I have references that show both white and black ammo pouches. What color was the belt and pouches? Does anyone have good photos of the gear?

Thanks. | Date | Replies | 10th January 2003 | John Young Lance,
For the most part the belt & belt ammunition pouches were buff leather - normally whitened, however, on campaign some of the regulations were lapsed and the pouches became dulled or in some cases stained.
An earlier pattern of Valise equipment had black belt ammunition pouches - there is photographic evidence that men some regiments in the Anglo-Zulu War wore these.
In addition to the belt ammunition pouches there was th 'expense pouch, or "ball-bag" which in action was worn below the right belt ammunition pouch. I can scan you the set-up for the Valise equipment from one of the official manuals if that's any use.
