16th January 2003Film 2002: Scene from Zulu Dawn "Remake"?
By George Hulmes
Hi guys.

I've been meaning to post this for a while now, and since I have the chance, I will.

Before Christmas, I don't know when it was, I caught part of an edition of Film 2002 on BBC1, halfway through a section which focused on up-and-coming films. It featured a woman talking to the camera on the Thames waterfront opposite Victoria promenade I think.

Anyway, I turned away from the TV for a second, and when I turned back, I saw a group of redcoated soldiers in African issue pith helmets crowding round a set of colours, obvviously in a battle situation. Not only this, but on screen I also saw two artillery pieces with limbers being towed off parallel in the background. The screen then switched to an overhead shot, with many figures running to the right of the screen, with about half a dozen wagons on the ground. I also noticed the terrain was very veldt-like.

I was so suprised by this, I completely ignored the narrative, and the programme swiched back to showing scenes from other films in the making or due to be released in the future.

My first and only thoughts were that it was the battle of Isandhlwana I had seen, and having already seen Zulu Dawn half a dozen times, I was convinced what I had seen was a snippet from a remake of the film.

I went to the Film2002 website in the following few days, but had no luck there. One person informed me that it might have been a scene from a remake of "The Four Feathers" due to be released, but I was still sure that the battle scene depicted Isandhlwana.

I was just wondering if anyone else had seen that particular showing of Film 2002, or knows more on the subject.

Thoughts?

Regards,
George

George,

Does sound like The Four Feathers - due for release over here at the end of this month

Try the website - if you have broadband the excerpts are excellent
- www.fourfeathersmovie.com - I gather the rest of the film does not match up to the battle scene.

It does sound like the four feather ,but maybe it is a remake :-)!!!! if not , i think if the'v'e made a remake of the four feather then surely a zulu film will be made in the next few years.

Dave, I'm positive it was Isandhwana I saw, making it a Zulu Dawn remake.
I'll check out the website, and if the battle scene I saw is not mentioned, I think we DO have a remake on our hands.

Hi guys! I contacted Channel 5 regarding the RAC Zulu War advertisment when I was searching for my 24th regiment uniform for the 1879 Group. I thought they wouldn't reply but almost a month later I got one! The gentleman told me that it had been filmed in South Africa and the uniforms were found by the director in the stores and markets out in SA. Fingers crossed tightly for a Zulu or Zulu Dawn remake!
Cheers

Hi Alex.

Well it looks like a " fag Break " around a cannon and what looks like Isandlwana
in the background. They are discussing
car insurance 1879 style !!!!!!!!

Best wishes.

Hi Mo ,
Thankyou for the info ,it's strange that the rac would do a zulu dawn based advert ,perhaps there is something else behind it (upcoming movie ?) ?.

Hi Alex.
It seems from what I can find out that the
R A C have been recreating different scenes
from films in their advertising campaign which
has been ongoing for over 12 months and they have been well received. The one from
Zulu Dawn used uniforms from the film.

Guys, I remember that RAC advert, the series being paradies of scenes from different themed films. The series was called "RAC Movie Extras" to my recollection, as they focused on two bungling movie extras in thier roles in different movies

The "Zulu" RAC ad was meant to lampoon the intro of Zulu, with the Zulus walking through the battlefield devastation at Isandhlwana, taking the rifles from the bodies of the soldiers.

I don't think it has anything to do with a Zulu Dawn remake, as the helmets worn by the two "extras" character looked quite cheap and had cardboard "gold" regimental crests on them! In adition, the regimental coulers were in the near background, a glaring innacuracy considering the Coghill and Melville legend.

I visited the "Four Feathers" website, and it had some great pictures from the battle sequences on it. After seeing these, I have to admit I think what I saw on Film2002 were scenes from 4 Feathers. Yet I could be mistaken, as the uniforms in the film are almost exactly those worn in South Africa, 1879, and Martini-Henrys were being used also.

George
