Well put John - lets hope that one day we shall
have headstone memorals at the graves of all those buried in un-marked plots here in the UK.

That will be some time coming I am afraid no one in a position to do these things local councils goverment or the military themselves do not seem to bother, not only in the UK but overseas as well I was in Mafeking South Africa recently and the British Military cemetry there is a compleat disgrace all over grown with weeds and in some instance vandalised I wrote to the war graves commision about on my return and they simply did not want to know

I agree - We have three Rorke's Drift defenders to my knowledge here in Birmingham who are buried in un-marked graves.

I'm presently trying to get a headstone
memorial to James Cooper VC but intend to try and do something for the three as my next project.

It's a shame the splendid work done at Newport Cemetery can not be copied for all Rorke's Drift defenders. Who ever was responsable for the headstone memorials there should be very proud.

Andy,

If your referring to the graves of Lyons, Saxty & Murphy, that was the work, of the sadly now defunct, South Wales Branch of the then Anglo-Zulu War Research Society.

The stone mason provided the headstones free of charge, and we were most grateful for his splendid effort and craftsmanship.

However, the society was flooded with requests to do more. I endeavoured to raise a fund to do more, but it came to nothing, I'm sorry to say.

I must admit , i dont agree with the firefighters strike especialy at a time such as now when the army need's it's soldiers for what there paid to do , not putting out fire's because a union is causing problem's
