South Africans Mobilised to Care for Tourists By Chuck Hoskinson A citizen mobilisation campaign called Travel Buddies is demonstrating the I CAN in South AfrICAN. The network, which includes more than 10 000 South Africans nationally and grows in strength daily, is designed to ensure that visitors to South Africa enjoy a warm welcome and are offered access to experiences that are not normally part of a travel itinerary. Travel Buddies operates via a website: www.satravelbuddy.co.za on which tourists planning to visit South Africa can register. Once they arrive they are met by a representative of the Travel Buddy programme and are advised on hiring a cellular telephone. The system runs via SMS, so this cell phone becomes the connection to the Travel Buddies network. This is an interesting concept which could contribute to the South African tourist experience as well as safety of the tourists. Go to the web site at www.satravelbuddy.co.za and take a look!
