29th August 2001 John Williams Fielding's VC on ebay
By Thomas Watson
To start off I wanted to say that this site is great. I have been looking into the Zulu Wars ever since my father introduced me to the movie ZULU a decade ago which started off a quest to gain information on these events. I have been absorbing all the info on this site and wanted to thank everyone for answering so many questions I had just by reading all the forum postings. Now to the reason for this posting...

A couple weeks ago I noticed a VC being auctioned on ebay that was John WIlliams Fieldings. (Search completed auctions #1174694456 to see the pic and the auction.)

The auctioneer states this was a private purchase VC that would be worn on Johns uniform. I do not know a lot about these VC medals, but from the description it sounds like this is different from what was presented to him. Would the one he got to wear on his uniform be different then the presented VC? Is it made of the same material? Does this mean that all VC recipients would have a show case medal and a second one that they would wear on their uniform.

I noticed no one bided on this item, so my last question is what uniform crosses have been selling for when put up compared to the presented ones. I would appreciate any information you guys could add about this medal compared to the one in the museum that was presented. Thanks

Oops, my mistake this was William Jones's VC.

Hi Thomas,

William Jones's actual VC is not too far away from me. This one advertised on the ebay site could be a replica he had made when he was with Colonel 'Buffalo Bill' Cody's circus. Just a pure guess on my part - I would not like anyone to think the story was actually true - it might increase the auction price!!!
