Date | Original Topic | 16th March 2003 | Chard-Bromhead mates? By Barry Iacoppi Came home from the range the other day and had a Martini to clean. Found I had the house to myself and decided to clean the rifle in the lounge. This is a big no no when my wife is at home. Put Zulu in the VCR (another not again no no) and settled down to a comfortable afternoon.
I always find something new of interest every time I see Zulu and this time I was left wondering just what was the real relationship between Chard and Bromhead?
Baker and Caine play them as being aloof. Not friendly but respectful of each other.
Is it known what the two men thought of each other? Did they become friends after R.D.? I know that many friendships are forged in combat but was this the case with these two?

I hold no evidence that Chard and Bromhead were friends. Bromhead was a regimental officer for all his service, he had been in South since February 1878 whereas Chard was very much the newcomer to the area having only arrived on 9 (?) January 1879. After RD, Bromhead was in Gibraltar with 2nd Battalion and then went on to India and was involved in the Burma campaign. He died in India in 1891. Althought he was at home between Apr 1881 and Dec 1882 when they could have met. You will have to see whether anyone else has views on this |
