24th March 2003 | Company rosters at Isandhlwana By Justin Could any one tell me if there is any source that you can find out which company a NCO or EM of the 1/24 or 2/24 served with at the the battle of Isandhlwana. I have the Roll Call which details troops involved -Killed or survivers but it would be interesting to find out who served (and probably died) with which companies.
Many thanks in advance.

24th March 2003 | Martin Everett Dear Justin,
I also would like to know which companies the casualties were alocated to - but no muster roll survives. I recently can across a roll for C Company 2/24th (dated June/July 1879) which was with Lord Chelmsford. There mya be some rolls out there somewhere but I very much doubt it as most of the records were lost in the baggage.

I did think this may be the case- with people doing alot of work and research getting the casualty rolls made up, I suppose if the company each soldier belonged to would have been a logical inclusion.

27th March 2003 | David Bluestein I have been down this road before, researching Pte. James Bull 1/24th killed at Isandlwana. Knowing his Company would have made it possible to follow his activities on January 22nd. However never any luck in this endeavor. If any one has any suggestions PLEASE be in touch.
Thanks David |

Will do- its frustrating that this doesn't seem to be possible but I suppose many eminent historians have also had this problem over the years!

After years of research into the company rosters of the 1/24 and 2/24, not just at Isandlwana, I have had some success. There are four books which supply some useful information. They are ' The Road to Isandlwana ' Philip Gon, ' The Red Soldier ' Frank Emery, ' The Noble 24th ' Norman Holmes and ' Hill of the Sphinx ' David Jackson.
Colour Sergeants: Ballard ( F ), Brown ( A ), Wolfe ( H ), Edwards ( E ), Whitfield ( C ).
Sergeants: Cooper, Upton ( F ), Clarkson, Heppenstall ( A ), Bennet, Fay ( E ).
Other Ranks: O.Ellis ( C ), A.Goatham ( A ).
Hope this is of some help.
