Date | Original Topic | 14th April 2003 | Private William Samuel By Sally Question which Martin will probably answer !
Family of Samuel curently at Isandlwana and claim he was at Rorke's Drift at time of battle.
Please can you confirm ? | Date | Replies | 14th April 2003 | John Young Sally,
Is that the full name William SAMUEL? Or are those forenames, and you've missed off the surname?
If Samuel is the surname, there was no-one by that name, unless he used an alias, at the Defence of Rorke's Drift.
Nor can I find a possible match for you in the medal roll.
John Y. | 14th April 2003 | Sally This is the full name given by the relatives !
Thanks for effort. | 24th April 2003 | Julian Whybra Perhaps he used an alias? | 24th April 2003 | Peter Ewart Don't suppose we have just the very faintest possibility of old "Bob" beginning to raise his "Head" at last, do we?
Or is it far more likely that a family story with a genuine origin ("I was at Rorkes Drift in 1879") which could truthfully be claimed by thousands of old sweats, has metamorphosed into "the Old Man was at the Defence of Rorkes Drift in 1879."? This has certainly happened in many cases.
What is the family's source, Sally?
Peter
| 25th April 2003 | sally Maybe he was there before or after battle -
Family source was Samuel's who stayed at Isandlwana Lodge for just one night - no other info I fear.
Looking at the RD list there are several
'Samuel's' but not as a surname .... |
