15th April 2003'Maori' Browne's father
By Dave Nolan
Further to the correspondence on the forum about George Hamilton Browne's father between John Young, Steve Moore, Keith Smith and others - (began 27th February)- can I offer the following from the London Times' Births, Marriages and Death announcements for the 11th February 1916 (repeated the following day)?

Deaths

BROWNE - on the 28th Jan in a nursing home at Jamaica, Colonel George Hamilton Browne (Maori) late Colonel Commandant in the SA Colonial Service eldest surviving son of the late Major George Browne (late of the 41st Regt) of Cumber, Co Londonderry. SA and NZ papers please copy.

As this would presumably have been placed by the family then hopefully this clears up the issue.

Well done Dave,

Solved that one for me, and now I want my money back from the researcher in Co. Londonderry!

The most likely candidate is Major George Richard Browne, formerly of the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regt., but linked to the 41st (The Welsh) Regt.

Served in the Crimea with the 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regt., dangerously wounded on the attack on the Redan, on 18th June, 1855. His right arm was amputated.

Served in the Indian Mutiny, medal with clasp 'Central India'. Retired 4th June, 1858.

Given 'Maori' Browne's approx. age, his birth should be recorded on his father's service papers, if they still exist.

Money back? Depends on what the commission was - i.e., exactly what you asked him to do. Given Harford's details & the address, could the two "potential" fathers have been close relatives by any chance?

You mention his chances of having served in the BSAC. If not them, there was an Inspector Browne who served at Mafeking in the Cape Police alongside the BSAP & Bechuananaland Rifles (Vol IV, Times History of the war in SA) but no christian name given. Sort of unit he might have got involved with? On the other hand, had he been at the siege we'd probably have known about it!

Excellent work Dave!! Browne gives his father's name as George on his marriage certificate. Browne is reticent about his antecedents in his books. I have tried twice now to get a copy of his death certificate from Jamaica. Unfortunately the registration districts there are divided into 15 or 16 sub areas and without an exact date they will not search the records....now we have an exact date...so I can re-apply - top stuff and well done.

Hi
Who is Maori Browne? I am doing research on the Browne family/Jamaica, so any information you have will be of interest to me. My great uncle's name was Austin Hamilton Browne(jamaica). I had heard their was a relation of his, who fought in the Boer War.
Wonder if there is a connection between George Hamilton Browne and Austin Hamilton Browne?
What year did George Hamilton Browne die in Jamaica, and what was his connection to the island?
The Brownes came from Co. Mayo Ireland.
I am interested in hearing from you.
