17th April 2003 | J.CHARD By P.HARMAN On the 22nd January,1879. J.Chard went to the camp at Isandhlwana to have his orders clarified. In the book ZULU VICTORY it states that J.Chard had been watching the Zulus on the skyline moving to the west until they disappeared behind Isandhlwana hill and that an N.C.O.had lent him a telescope. It also says that in occurred to Chard that the Zulus might be heading for Rorke's Drift. On his return journey to Rorke's Drift he met Durnford and after receiving a request from Durnford continued on.
Question how far was J.Chard from Rorke's Drift at the point where he met Durnford.
And did J.Chard pass on the information regarding the fact that he had seen Zulus near Isandhlwana.Or did he just go bact to rorke's drift to build his pont.
By the way its nice to be back and good to see the web site is still interesting.

17th April 2003 | Richard Waters Why not just tell him both and save a post? |
18th April 2003 | Keith Smith Chard, in his letter to Queen Victoria, says that he was "a quarter of a mile or less"from the Isandlwana camp when he met Durnford.
It is very likely that Chard told Durnford what he had seen: one of his first actions when he reached the camp was to send Lt Vause back with a troop of Zikhali's Horse to protect the baggage train.
