Researching above for article in VMS Magazine. It is stated that he was an ex Imperial officer. No mention in Hart's though. Also no listing in British Birth indexes in P.R.O. He said that he had for sometime been residing in Natal and that he was married. Oliver Ransford said that Newman came to know the Boers well. Obviously aware of his 2 famous books; "In Zululand" and "With the Boers", but am intrigued by an entry in the bibliography in John Selby's Shaka's Heirs (1971)which mentions a book by Newman called Matabeleland & How We Got It (London 1895)which the British Library is unable to supply.
Even Ian Knight gives little info in the AZW Correspondents book. As Newman was the only journalist around in Jan 1879 I thought a more in depth study of his life would perhaps contribute more to our understanding. Any tips, advice or comments gratefully received.
