16th October 2003Shield padding.
By David Glynne Fox
Whilst engrossed watching a number of the recent visitations and re-enactments on Zulu sites on video , I have noticed that many of todays Zulu people have added foam backing, or something similar to the back of their shields. Having played around with one or two from my own collection, I have discovered that they can be rather rough on the old knuckles, especially, I would imagine, after having battered one or two adversaries. Can anyone inform me if the Zulu of 1879 and before, or just after for that matter, added any padding and of what material to the backs of their shields. I have scanned the literature but to no avail so far. Many thanks. David
