I quote from 'The South African Campaign of 1879', page 315;
'...Hastened back with the cos., menaced by the enemy, to Helpmakaar (which was devoid of garrison), with the object of protecting the ammunition and supplies amassed, and formed a waggon laager round the commissariat store- the command of the detachment having been, in the meantime, taken over by Col. Hassard, R.E. Performed transport duty throughout the remainder of the war.'
