By Isambard
Hi, I'm 15 years old. Saw the film Zulu for the first time about three weeks ago. I have to say, it is one of (if not the best) film I have ever seen... anyway, I wont go into all that, I'd go on for too long! lol.
I was wondering if there was a computer simulation of the defense of Rorke's Drift (i.e. game). I have seen the 'Zulu War' sreenshots from twylite, which looks excellent, however the prject has been postponed/cancelled until further notice. I know of the ISI game... but that concentrates more on the entire campaign side of things. What I am searching for, is a game that puts you in the position of Chard/Bromhead/Doulton and allows you to organise and prepare the defence of Rorke's Drift, and then fight the actual battle. Is there anything like this out there? Once in the actual battle you have to control your men down to the very last detail, such as their rate of fire (independant etc) their positioning, etc etc. If there isnt a game like this, maybe we could set about producing one? I say game, but I mean more of a simulation.
If there isnt one out there, would it perhaps be possible to produce one? The graphics need not be great in my opinion, it's the game play that matters.
Anyhow, just want to thank you for an excellent site! VERY interesting... :)
best regards,
Simon

Cant help you with your game or simulation but it's good to see young folk taking an interest in history. Just beware, I got hooked on the Anglo-Zulu war because of the film Zulu. Micheal Caine and Stanley Baker have a lot to answer for! I emigrated to SA in 1982 and became a bit of an amateur historian with regard to the Zulu and Boer wars. Yes, it is fascinting stuff, and full of heroics, spectacular blunders and amazing ego's. Maybe read a couple of good books on the subject. You WILL get hooked! Good luck with your game.

Sorry,I don't know of any simulation game for your computer but check with your local hobby store for a local gamming group that deals with colonial wars, example British vs Zulus or British vs Dervish. I myself game with 25mm figures fighting the battle of Rorke's Drift and other Zulu battles.

ok, no worries that you guys dont know of a pc based game for it. I would have a go at making one myself if I had the know how. I'll certainly look into the modelling side of things though. However, I've been put off from this in the past, as I dont have a great deal of time to devote to painting all the figures. I must admit, would look great to see a table top full of Zulus and British infantry... lol.

Way back in the mists of time, on the Amiga, there was a games called "Rorke's Drift" which was a really rubbish simulation. That's the only game I know about that has been published. There WAS a company called Twylyt Productions working on a new PC simulation, but they went bust, so that's no good either.

I would agree that there is a market for a game, but whether it's a mass-market is another question all together.
