Date | Original Topic | 5th January 2004 | Zulu Cottages. By Bernie Drummond. First may I wish contributors and readers of this excellent site A Happy New Year. I am prompted by the recent reference to Fred Hitch to mention the following small piece of trivia regarding Fred's birthplace. I lived in Southgate for some years, and whilst doing some research into Fred, discovered from the 1861census that at the age of 5 he was living with his parents in Chase Rd Southgate. Wandering down the adjacent Chelmsford Rd
I spotted that a row of terraced houses bore the name; Zulu Cottages. I subsequently found from O.S. maps that Chelmsford Rd had received its name around 1881. If this was the work of a builder inspired by the local VC hero Hitch, why not Hitch Rd? Then again, it was never a 'Private' Rd. (Sorry about the pun.) | Date | Replies | 7th January 2004 | Alan Critchley Bernie,
when naming roads, perhaps they did consider Hitch but maybe it was scratched. |
