Date | Original Topic | 10th January 2002 | Terrain at Rorkes Drift . By Greg Having stuied many modern day pictures of when looking at Rorkes drift and for that matter other Zulu war sites,I cant help but notice the drastic increase in the amount of vegatation in Zululand.I refer to Ian Knight`s "Zulu war then and now" as the best example of showing this .Would anyone agree that had the vegetation been this dense 120 years ago, the Zulu`s who were very good at making use of cover may have inflicted more defeats on the British forces. | Date | Replies | 11th January 2002 | Alan Critchley Greg,
I've always wondered why the vegetation and shrubs were less in the photos of the time.
I concluded that since the Zulu economy is now less dependent on cattle, which would eat growing vegetation, plants and bushes have now grown faster than can be consumed.

Another reason may be the weather. Can't remember where I read this but I thought the Rorke's Drift area had just been through a six-year period of drought.
