Date | Original Topic | 10th December 2004 | Royal Marines - HMS Active By Peter Weedon I have acquired the South Africa medal with clasp 1877-8-9 to Pte T Smith, who served with the Royal Marines.
Has anyone seen any pictures of the Marines from HMS Active in any publication?
Thanks
Peter Weedon | Date | Replies | 10th December 2004 | John Young Peter,
There is a photograph of Active's landing brigade in a number of books, with R.M.L.I. & R.M.A. in the centre of the group.
There was also an engraving in the Graphic, which was reproduced over pages 32-33 of my book, which shows the Royal Marines, I assume the original sketch at was made at the same time as the photograph, or maybe based on the photograph.

Thanks. I have found the image in Barthrop's book. According to the credits, the picture cam from the Africana Museum in Jo'burg. I know that the Museum (now MuseuMAfricA) has been renamed but I cannot find an email address, only a postal address. Does anyone know of the Museum is contactable by email?
