Thanks for your help, Martin.

Is it true that Fred died of pneumonia caught while on strike against Winston Churchill's refusal to give the cabbies a rise?

Didn't know about the link with Carrington. Do you know what Hitch did between his discharge in 1879 and his incident at the Institute?

Does anyone have any info about the particular circumstances of the theft of Hicks' VC. I know he worked at the United Services Institute, but some further details would help.
Thanks

Dear Harman and TonyJones,

Hi Tony,
I don't think that we can absolve Frere from responsibility for starting the Zulu war although he certainly carried the can for a very dishonest Hicks-Beach. I think you are right about the ...

Hi,
Just a couple of points. Firstly, Frere did not create the conditions for civil war in Zululand - that honour goes to Wolseley and Gladstone as I argued in an article called "Who killed Cet ...

Hi Rich,
That is a very big question. I can only say that he was a defence expert who wrote the first real plan for the defence of India. He freed the slaves of Zanzibar and built Kracahi and Bomba ...

Just a short excerpt.

"Although he had been instrumental in putting in motion the raising of the colonial mounted volunteers by the Peace Preservation Act of 1878, Frere never really had much ...
