Hi Guys.
Could someone please confirm for me whether a 17th Lancer
private would have worn one or two ammunition pouches on his waistbelt.
Thanks.
Jeremy.

Jeremy,

Most of the images I've looked at this morning appear to show them wearing the right pouch. That may well be down to the order of the day that the men are in.

I'll keep looking and see if I can find a contemporary engraving or photograph that contradicts this. The ones I have looked at this morning where two pouches are worn are not from the period.

What does surprise me is that a bandolier was worn by the regular cavalry in the field. The closest I can find is the well-known image of the K.D.G. other-rank at Isandlwana wearing a waist belt and two pouches over his shoulder.
