I was reminded of your bibliography when coming across some material I photocopied a year or so back from The Annual Register. I don't know if you are familiar with this publication, which was published in London and carried detailed and well written accounts of the previous year's world events, and which today appear mostly in bound annual volumes in specialist libraries. The Register for 1879 (publ. 1880) contains a general overview of the Zulu situation in Part 1, a lengthy chapter later on covering the war under the title of "South Africa" and also some interesting comment elsewhere on the public fortunes of some of the leading personalities in the AZW. You may already have logged this material, but if not I can provide more detailed references if required. Peter |

Hello Peter,
Thank you very much for your interesting and helpful message. I was not familiar with the Annual Register, and could not find it listed on COPAC. I would be grateful if you could please provide me with the publication details of this volume (and any others), which I will gladly add to my bibliography project. Thank you. Cheers, Harold |

I think it has being going since the 18th century & is still published today. Slightly surprised by the COPAC omission - I haven't checked COPAC myself tonight but can confirm you'll find some background on the series by googling or "Wiki-ing." Not quite in the same league academically, I know(!) but you'll pick up some info on its character and history. Anyway, full title: The Annual Register: Review of Public Events at Home and Abroad for the Year 1879. New Series. (published 1880, London). Editor unknown but I may be able to ascertain that later. No Vol Number as far as I know. Contains Part 1 (Chapts I to VI) & Part II, plus index. Part I ("English History. Chapter 1") includes material described in the chapter sub-headings as: Outbreak of the Zulu War - Boer Encroachments - Attitude of Cetchwayo - Sir Bartle Frere & Sir Henry Bulwer - Views of the Government - The Ultimatum to Cetchwayo - Discussion in Parliament; the material itself being found in pp2-23. In the same volume, Part I (Chapter IV - "Egypt & South Africa") Section II of that chapter is devoted to "South Africa" in which pp224-248 provide a narrative of the events and progress of the war itself, including the aftermath and the influence on Basutoland and the Transvaal, as well as a brief account of the "Defeat of Secocoeni." In addition, pp76-79 (in which Part of the vol my photocopy doesn't reveal, so I'll check when next I can if required) there is a discussion as to how the war and its participants have been portrayed in the British media and received by the public. Several papers and journals are mentioned which I presume are outside the scope of your project? It mentions, for example, that an article in the Saturday Review of 18 Oct 1879, the "swords of honour" being presented to many returning officers led that paper to indulge in some "sarcasm at the indiscriminate character of the compliments." If any of this is helpful, I'd be pleased to look up any missing details re vol number (if any) or in which Part & Chapter of the vol the final extract is found, when I can. Peter |
