I know this will be a quick one and there is no such thing as a stupid question but.....

What bayonet would the 24th be sporting at Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift, the 1853 converted with curve to top or the 1876 new pattern 'Lunger'.

I think I may have sold the wrong one!!!

be good to here from you, bet you cannot resist Neil...

Carl, I invited input on the very same question a while back and the consensus was that the First Battalion at Isandlwana would surely have carried the '53 conversion because of its already lengthly tenure in SA by 1879, whereas the Second Battalion, more recently arrived "in country" could possibly have carried the '76 pattern. The famous Fripp painting appears to picture both, but whether artistic license is a factor on his part is anyone's guess.

taking the bait.... actually the scabbard picked up by Curzon Drury Lowe, which is 24th marked at Isandlwana in the debris, (now at Brecon I believe), is a P53/74 pattern. Fairly conclusive.

The Scabbard itself was subject of an article by Graham Priest, one of the UK's leading authority on socket bayonets. I was chatting with him at Stoneleigh a fortnight ago, as he was admiring my 17 incher (LOL) which is matching scabbard/bayonet number, it is a rare scabbard variant...wow!, even I was impressed.

Three weeks to Drifting and counting.
