On Wales on Line today:

A MEMORIAL is to be unveiled on the previously unmarked grave of Edward Savage, one of the heroes of the battle of Rorkes Drift, which was immortalised in the film Zulu.

On June 4 the Friends of Cathays Cemetery, in co-operation with the Royal Welsh Regiment, Firing Line (Cardiff Castle Military Museum) and Mossfords, will uncover the honour.

Born in Newport, Edward joined the army in 1877 aged 18 and sailed the following year to South Africa, where he saw action before being sent to Rorkes Drift.

When the battle started, Edward was in the camp hospital suffering from an injured knee. According to reports, he jumped through the window and assisted in the defence.

Following his discharge, he married, settled in Riverside, Cardiff, and took a job as a council worker before he died in 1893, aged only 32.

Friends of Cathays Cemetery has already traced descendants of Edward in Canada, but there may be others still in Wales, possibly through his eldest son Edward John Savage, born in 1888, and would like them to get in touch. Contact John Farnhill on 07753 169891 or Paul Nicholson on 029 2087 4582.
