I have been doing some research at the National Archives tracing back through the records for 1st Btn 24th. What I seem to get are the Pay Lists which show men alphabeticaly by rank, but not by Companies. Does anyone know whether separate Muster Books (i.e. by Company) exist prior to 1879? I understand that the one in use at Isandlwana was destroyed, but what about prior to that? Any help appreciated.

Steve

Steve,

Having been around this for over 25 years - the answer is no - there are no company rolls surviving - You can do some elimination - there are pay roll for Capt Wardell's company who were stationed on St Helena (August 1877 and August 1877) - WO12/4132 and WO16/1573 - many of the men were still in H Company at Isandlwana. Also Harrisson's company (was B Company - later H Company in May 1879) was at St John's River - and did not receive the 1879 clasp (as they did not fight the Zulu). But then the clasps shown on the medal roll can be inaccurate. That's the best I can do.

Many thanks. It is as I feared.
