Slightly off topic (but Sheldon might know the answer) - what's happened to the reconstruction of John Wayne's The Alamo.

You know there "oughta be a law". That for every film print made it should be stashed in a time capsule somewhere. Hollywood, Bollywood wherever. It's times like these when you dearly need a print that film laws matter. Wink

And I'm still wondering if that 'line in the sand' scene was historic!

Seems a 'line in the sand' might have been drawn on the restoration of The Alamo. Apparently, I am informed by a reliable source, funds have run out.

I've not watched 'Zulu' all the way through that was on Film4 yet, ( I recorded it ) but the 'Yes, of course' comment by Michael Caine, I've only ever heard clearly in one version of the film, whether tv, video or DVD I can't remember.

Why this single piece of dialogue is missing/unheard is a mystery, or as you said - an 'anomaly'.

As for funds running out for the Alamo, I did read that back in 2002 MGM gave $500,000 towards the restoration and it was figured $650,000 more would be needed. We're 12 years on now. And I do hope it could have a good outcome like Lawrence of Arabia where supposedly the uncut version was saved after it was found in a Queens NY bowling alley by film preservationist Robert Harris.

Are you talking about the Alamo version that included the intermission and deleted/extended scenes, which I did have on video several years ago ?

The director's cut print (for restoration) was a 70mm one found in Toronto. They call it a "roadshow" print. I'm not sure what the one on video is.

The complete version of The Alamo was available on video and, I think, on laserdisc at some stage. But for all the background on the attempted restoration check out the excellent website in70mm.com.

And I went and gave away my video of the complete 'The Alamo' as well, never to be gotten back. Sad

Then again, my actual video player is long since been disposed of.

I don't have the book but I do have the Alamo dvd (MGM disc) and inside there's a clip devoted to the "making of John Wayne's Alamo".
