Many of you will be familiar with the work of the Victorian Battle Artist Richard Caton Woodville (1856-1927).
His paintings and sketches (that include the Anglo Zulu War) have featured in many contemporary newspapers, particularly the Illustrated London News; As well as more recent books & magazines on the subject.

It may be of interest to you that his great grandson Tony Woodville has arranged for a new headstone to be erected over RCW's previously unmarked grave.
A re-dedication ceremony will take place at 11.30 a,m on Saturday 28th September 2013 in St.Mary's Roman Catholic cemetery on Harrow Road (next to Kensal Green cemetery) in London.

Anyone who would like to attend this ceremony would be more than welcome.
More information can be obtained from Tony: [email protected]

Thanks for the tip Alan
I have now established that Surgeon James Henry Reynolds VC grave is number 504NE within St Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery at Kensal Green.

Richard Caton Woodville's is 10112.

Fortunately I have been given a map of the very large Cemetery and I have identified the location of the two graves mentioned above.

Could you advise how to upload photos within posts to this site ?
I can then provide some photos of the rededication ceremony that takes place on 28th September 2013 and also of Surgeon Reynold's grave.

Thanks

When you have pics, contact me I'll suggest a way. If you aren't able to do it, I'll do it on your behalf.

Any chance of your name when we correspond? I'm not going to call you Sir.

Just another thing, would it be possible to find it on Google Earth and supply the co-ordinates, as is done with Reynolds?

Hi Alan
Thanks for that information.
I will attempt to establish the co-ordinates of RCW's grave and let you know.
It is a lot further down the left turning path than Surgeon Reynolds gravesite.

Also will let you know the confirmed attendees for the re-dedication ceremony that will be performed by a RC Priest on 28th September.
I know a military history publication rep is hoping to attend to record the event.

My photos from the 28th ceremony to follow.
Thanks for your help.

86 years after being laid to rest in a paupers grave, Richard Caton Woodville, the Victorian Battle Artist, finally received an inscribed granite headstone on his burial plot.

The new headstone was blessed by the Priest, Father Natalino Mignolli, during a moving ceremony in the Roman Catholic cemetery at Kensal Green in London on 28th September 2013.
The headstone had been commissioned by the artist's great grandson Tony Woodville, a resident of Chudleigh in Devon.

A number of guests attended the ceremony including:
Andrew Parsons - Museum Curator & Archivist of the London Scottish Regimental Headquarters;
Henry Vivian-Neal - Representing the Trustees of Kensal Green cemetery
Rai England - Researcher of the 1879 Anglo Zulu War

The plight of Caton Woodville's burial plot, who died penniless in 1927 from a self inflicted gunshot wound, was highlighted through research of the family history, carried out by Tony and myself.
Our research resulted in our writing and presenting an illustrated talk about the life and works of this eminent Victorian Battle Artist, whose paintings & illustrations shaped the British public's image of their Imperial Army at war, usually in the most dramatic and gallant style (A style that would rapidly fall from favour with the advent of the 20th century and the horrors of the First World War)

Caton Woodville spent most of his career working for the Illustrated London News and also publishing his work in The Tatler and The Strand magazines.
He was frequently commissioned by both British and overseas Royalty to paint for them, and he received significant fees in payment, typically around 500 guineas each.

21 of Caton Woodville's paintings are part of the Royal Collection and 20 of his paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy in London during the 48 year period 1879 to 1927.

For Tony Woodville the event was both emotional yet very satisfying - By arranging the erection of the headstone, he had provided a belated recognition of the life and death of his great grandfather.

Tony has produced an excellent biographical write up about his great grandfather.
If anybody would like any further information about Richard Caton Woodville, then please contact Tony Woodville on [email protected]

No RCW's it is not far from RD's Surgeon Reynolds grave in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Kensal Green. London
The Reynold's Grave Plot Number is Area N.E 504
It is a lot nearer the entrance to the cemetery than RCW's grave !
A few photos of Reynold's grave on the hyperlink below:
