I also think they are bravery beads. I'm no expert but I somehow doubt it dates from the nineteenth century. The condition looks too good to me so I suspect it is a more modern item. But I could be wrong!

Only one bid. That suggests to me several possibilities:
Few people saw it; Someone has bagged a bargain; Someone has overpaid. Like history, I'm sure the truth will emerge in the end! Peter |

As the secretary of my local Orders and Medals Research Society branch I arranged for Ian Knight to give a presentation to members. He was excellent - as usual - and brought along a number of interesting artefacts including a string of Zulu bravery beads. I contacted Ian to ask what he thought of the eBay offering after the auction had ended. He was obviously a better judge of these things than me as he bought it and it is the genuine article. The gloss which I found so unsettling was due to bright lighting/flash photography so while the camera may never lie it certainly can deceive.
So it looks like someone has bagged a bargain after all. Peter |
