I imagined that 'A Soldier Artist in Zululand' would be like an investment, being a limited edition etc.

The de-luxe editions perhaps, but the total print run was 3,000 which, in numismatic terms, would not be considered rare. Compare that to something like "The Rorke's Drift Doctor" which ran to a few hundred copies I think.

Mmmmm. I didn't know there were two types. How are they distinguished?

Thanks for making me get the dictionary out for 'numismatic'.

Here's another one - phaleristic. Most definitely not to be confused with philerastic. Which is why I stick to numismatic.

Back to the book. There are actually four types, the first three listed opposite the contents page.
20 presentation copies bound in full leather (not for sale - and I've no idea who received them)
The De-Luxe edition bound in full leather, limited to 26 copies, lettered A to Z.
The Collectors' Edition, bound in half-leather, limited to 100 copies, numbered 1 to 100.
The 3,000 total was the figure quoted by Martin Everett back in 2007.

phaleristic and philerastic

Sound like words which Black Adder made up and used to confound Samuel Pepys.
My dictionaries don't have either but I eventually found phaleristic ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phaleristics ).
I think you've made up philerastic.

I was thrown by the way I pronounced it in my head.
It should be: (Received Pronunciation) enPR: fĭʹlərăst, IPA(key): /ˈfɪləɹast/

Silly me.

Just for interest I have Presentation Copy No 9 - Leather with leather slip case signed by Nicky Rattray for David. It also contained the print of Isandhlwana rock by Lloyd 35/50.

That sounds wonderful. Just out of interest I did a search and the "ordinary" second hand copies are being advertised at 130+. I believe they were sold originally through David Rattray's sister but I don't know if all the stock has gone.

That answers Alan's question about investment.

Interestingly, the cheapest I can find on-line is 132. However, as ever, people can ask what they like. It does not mean people will actually pay that.
