Dear Alan

I have received a message - suggesting that Alan Baynham Jones has recently died. I have no other details and regrettably cannot verify the fact. I know that Alan recently moved to Lydney from the Forest to be closer to the local community hospital. He was an active member of the 1879 Group and was co-editor with Lee Stevenson of 'Rorke's Drift by those who were there'. If it is true - it is sad that he will no longer answer the bugle call.

If true, my condolences to his family. My inquiries have drawn a blank.

There was a notice in the Forest Review this week from the family thanking everyone who supported the funeral.

ABJ was incredibly kind and helpful to me when I rekindled my interest in the Zulu war in 2002. He was very generous in sharing the research and information he had spent a lifetime gathering. He invited me to his house and also - along with Lee - to the launch of their book. ABJ had a wicked sense of humour and the occasional spats between the various Zulu war factions provided no end of amusement - "better than the telly, old boy."

I will remember his knowledge and his generosity.

His email address often included the word Egypt which I assume was a reference to the 24th and the Sphinx. Farewell Alun - sadly missed.
