Officers Refusing To Obey Orders On Campaign

This was asked I think previously, but recently have acquired books about a US Cavalryman who did just that, in the attack of the Indian village of Sand Creek.

Captain Silas Soule gave evidence at the Inquiry held afterwards, shortly thereafter he was murdered, assumed to be connected to his testifying.

This begs the question - in the AZW many Kraals were completely destroyed, crops ruined and cattle taken from the Zulu people...

Are there no instances of officers and/or men refusing to obey orders that would endanger the lives of non-combatants, making it impossible for them to survive without shelter and food ?

Surely not all agreed with the methods, as Im not convinced by the constant response to this being along the lines of - that is War....

....also, this cant be shrugged off as a modern concept...the example Ive given shows that such men and incidents existed in the 19th Century
