This was a film I watched months ago, and have watched it since...surprisingly good, with James Faulkner (Lt Melvill) in it, along with other well-known actors.

Based on a closed-door trial within a regiment...which made me wonder just how many of such trials took place around 1879, to prevent a regiments reputation being tarnished.

Highly recommended, though Stacy Keach was quite an odd choice....as the panel president....

I've never heard of the film. I can't see any reference to Melvill anywhere
in the reviews of it or the play. The film is 1975, YouTube below.

James Faulkner played Lt Melvill in ZULU DAWN, but in this film he was the accused defended by Michael York.

Trevor Howard, Richard Attenborough, are amongst the cast.

It made me wonder if the era appealed to Faulkner, hence starring in ZULU DAWN, plus I think he co-produced iZulu Dawn or something similar...

Coll,
I thought you were saying that Melvill was portrayed in the 'Conduct Unbecoming' film. It was James Faulkner who was in the film.

That would have been an interesting concept...as I think it was Ian Knight himself who wondered what would have happened if Lt Melvill had survived, obviously minus the Colour...plus all the information about the events in camp he would have been able to describe in depth.

A Melvill Court Of Inquiry so to speak...

You might have hit on something...as in, an intriguing What if
