There is a report of the accidental death in a fire of Charles Aikenhead of the Rorke's Drift Hotel.
I met him a number of times both in KZN and in UK. He was commissioned from RMA Sandhurst
into Irish Guards in Dec 1965. He retired as Capt (ill health) in Mar 1974.
Martin Everett

Reports suggest that he was burning firebreaks when the wind came up and control was lost. One of the
buildings at the lodge caught fire and Charles was fighting to save his building when he collapsed.
He sadly succumbed before the ambulance could arrive.

That's a great shame if that's the case.
Met him on a few occasions around the time that he opened his hotel, plus once on our descendants tour in 2014.

That was indeed the case. Charles suffered a heart attack. The hotel is still going on. Paul Garner had been asked to continue the work. Insurance has also paid out.
