Ive been trying to locate a good book on this subject, specifically when thinking of the infantry line regiments and the Royal Engineers in 1879.
There are many hints of such during the Zulu War 1879, including the apparent jealousy directed at Chard being awarded the VC after Rorkes Drift, plus the impression the RE were not a proper front line unit, but is a subject quite neglected I guess, as it opens up many uncomfortable questions.
It is obviously known the British regular forces mistrusted the Colonial and native units and the others considered amateurs, but there did exist a strong rivalry between the actual different services within the British military itself.
This is likely to still exist in one form or another today, sometimes in a more lighthearted competitive spirit, for want of a better description.
Are there any books on this subject in regards to the British forces around the time of the Zulu War 1879, as anything Ive seen appears to be more modern.
