Not sure if this has been posted before, but it is a book I forgot about and hopefully will purchase soon.

Chapter One covers Carey and the death of the Prince Imperial -

It shows that the concept most definitely was in existence during the Zulu War 1879.

Written by someone who himself seems to have had a successful career as an officer in the military.

From inside the front cover -

The figure of the military scapegoat illuminates the human history behind cataclysmic events. Grappling with extreme stress, fear and exhaustion, bad weather, miscommunication or inopportune timing, who must take the blame when things go wrong ?

From the back cover -

At all costs avoid blame. Such is the creed of dictators and politicians, company chairmen, media celebrities and spin doctors the world over. But what about men at war, where penalties for errors of judgement can be devastating ? History is full of tales of those who have been wrongly castigated in the rush to find a culprit; only later, sometimes much later, when the real truth comes out, is the scapegoat exonerated.

This is a screenshot of part of an article in The Times about the books author -
