Chillianwallah.
Must have been hot action !

One of the rellies was there, 2708 Patrick Sweeney, and survived.
Bars, Chillianwallah and Gujerat.
I have that he was slightly wounded.

on the charge ?
Anything of interest on Trumpeter John Brown 17th Lancers ? (There were two there, I believe).
Another rellie, and AZW veteran.
I have;
born; Meerut, India 28th March, 1834 (His father Thomas was in 26th 'Cameronians')

died; 26th February, 1905 buried Dublin

Served 'in the ranks' of the 17th Lancers for 14yrs 285 days
(during 4yrs and 360 days he was 'under age'.)

Enlisted 1848 as Bandboy
Severely wounded charge 25th October 1854 & horse killed
Wounded by a bullet in the thigh
To Scutari 26th October 1854

Cpl 10 Nov 1854
Sgt 16 Nov 1854
Rejoined 11th May 1855
Became Rgtl Sgt Major

Cornet, and Adjutant 17th Lancers 23 Mar 1867;
Lieutenant 30 Oct 1869;
Captain & half pay 12 Feb 1879;
Appointed Paymaster 17th Lancers 18 Feb 1879;
(Hon) Major, Paymaster 79th Cameron Highlanders 18 Feb 1884;
Staff Paymaster 27 Mar 1889;
Retired (Hon) Lt.-Colonel 28 Mar 1894. (or 31st March 1898 ?) for �Services to the Army�


Campaign Medals;

Crimea British 3 clasps (Alma, Balaklava, Sebastopol) and Turkish
Indian Mutiny 1858-59 (Central India)
Zulu War 1879
Egypt British 1884-85 'Nile' clasp, and Khedive's star

As Trumpeter in the 17th Lancers, he took part in the 'Charge of The Light Brigade' at Balaklava. (25th October, 1854)
He was orderly trumpeter to the Commanding Officer at Balaklava
He was severely wounded at Tchernaya, and at the siege of Sebastopol.

His commission was purchased for him by (Gen) Drury-Lowe
They were friends for the remainder of their lives

He attended 1st Balaklava Banquet 25/10/1875
Member Balaklava Commemoration Society 1879

We did have an old photo of him in his uniform, but someone appears to have unfortunately lost it.

Next summer for the first one. I have four weeks to finish the last chapter and then a whole lot of editing and re-editing to do. But there is light at the end of the tunnel!
