I am lucky enough to have come across a Zulu War period Foreign Service helmet. It is in solid condition but the cloth is extremely soiled and generally 'manky'. I would be very grateful for any views on whether to clean it, whiten or 'khaki' it or leave it as it is. Thanks for your help.

Neil
If it is a genuine one my advice would to leave it as it is I collect badges of the Worcestershire Regiment and I know that by cleaning these olds things up you can vastly reduce the value

Neil, Take your time, no hurry for the photo's. As for cleaning, you have to be very carefull. I have attempted to clean mine and only made it worse.

Hi, the camera was my son's and I'm afraid it is now defunct, so no photos. I felt I had to have a go at cleaning the helmet, as it was so soiled it couldn't really be displayed. I found something called Tableau Spot Remover on the internet which has worked. I sprayed it all over the helmet lightly, and when it dried to a white powder brushed it off. I did this three times and the helmet is much cleaner and looks fine. I could probably clean it up more but am happy with it as it is now. Thanks for your interest. Neil
