If Rorke's Drift had not happened, would the story have been made up eventually and made into a film, because it is almost too good to be true.

A tremendous victory after a tremendous disaster

A fight against overwheling odds

Lots of heroic actions

Close quarter fighting

What do you all think?

Any novelist at the time or since, may have considered a What if ? scenario, involving Rorke's Drift being attacked.

However, if Rorke's Drift hadn't happened, I think people would have concentrated more on one of the other engagements, namely Isandlwana, due to the fact the defenders did all they could to repel the Zulu army, with many acts of heroism, including most of your list above.

Maybe 'Zulu Dawn' (although script and filming made to the same high standard as 'Zulu' ) would have been the epic film we would all have seen, drawing some of us into the AZW as enthusiasts, quite possibly with Stanley Baker in the role as Col. Durnford (as was intended)

Perhaps even with Michael Caine as Col. Pulleine ! Wink
