I will be visiting Rorke's drift this spring, and I would be very interested to hear from anyone who can throw any light on this soldier who died atRD on 25/10/1884, and is buried in the walled cemetery containing the remains of those who died on 22/1/1879. I have enquired at the Royal Dragoon Guards museum in York who hold no information, but tell me I am not the first person to enquire about him. R.T.

Any progress among the sources suggested in the last enquiry on the old forum? Is a first name known? Is he known to be a family connection? Those sources will be your best chance.

I am intending later this year to be reading a lot more correspondence from the Anglican missionary at St Augustine's, near Rorke's Drift and I will shout if I see anything in his 1884 letters.

No further info has been gleaned and therefore no first name, so have not been able to establish a connection. Would love to hear if you come up with anything in your researches.

Thorne is probably on a pay and muster roll held in the National Archives, but his documents would not have survived as he died in service.
